Getting started

Dec 16, 2021

The beginning of DONE is DO

As the glorious 5.80 skippers arrive in Antigua, I take my first delivery.  It made for a fun morning.

The Globe 5.80 CNC kit arrived from Fyne Boat Kits, and I opted for sapele because of its high resistance to rot and water damage.  I appreciate I'm compromising on weight with this choice.

Before I start, I need some knowhow... I need to figure out the mindset of a boat builder. I've tackled many of the typical DIY boat projects in the past but nothing of this scale. I'm not deterred though because of all the inspiring 5.80 builders that have shown the way. In any case, civilisations have been building boats for thousands of years. So, in an age when anyone can learn anything on the internet this has got to be doable. Okay, we will see.

I've started my prep with the Gougeon Brothers book on boat construction.  This is highly informative with the bonus it's a free download.

Then I'm also following Alan Mulholland's Wave Rover project.  It's different, but his build mindset is so positive and instructional.

And I've taken inspiration from the VIP small boat enthusiast, Sven Yrvind.

Of course, the list of the great and the good goes on and on...

I will name my boat 'El Camino' because I am inspired by those that have journeyed before me.

Now I have the plans, my first job is to prepare a workshop. At a secret location in north-west England...

I have the plans, I have some questions, I have some doubts, but most importantly I have the chance of building a seaworthy little yacht. The builders Mini!
